I’m absolutely terrified. Everyone has their stories of pain, bleeding, swelling, infection, all horrible stuff. Was is really horrible for you? Should I have all 4 extracted at once? So far, I’ve had 7 teeth removed and braces but I’m guessing the wisdom teeth will be the worst out of them all.

When people ask for encouragement about getting their wisdom teeth out, I like to share this story about my three children.

I removed two of my older daughter’s wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she’d be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.

Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn’t even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn’t last for more than 3 or 4 days.

With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn’t want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don’t remember the details.)

I’m not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

I have just gotten my braces off a few days ago, but my orthodontist said that my wisdom teeth coming in will probably make my teeth crooked again. Is it possible to have them removed before they surface to the gums, and have a chance to disrupt the other teeth? What process would they have to use?
Would you recommend waiting till they come in or getting it done asap?
Im 14 years old.

Depends on how old you are… You may have a few years before they grow in. – I had mine pulled before my braces but my mom’s didn’t come in until she was almost forty.

I’d do it now that way you don’t risk moving your teeth too much and having to go through braces again.

They would pull them just like any other teeth. I would recommend being asleep (general anethesia) rather than awake. I had to go in twice wisdoms and biscuspids – never doing the numbing shots in the mouth again.

I am 18 and my 4 wisdom teeth grew in recently. They are not crooked, painful, or crowded. My front teeth are crowded, but I have no plans for braces or invisalign in the future

Anyway, the wisdom teeth look just like extra molars. They have tons of space.

If my wisdom teeth cause no discomfort, and if they stay in the same position without impacting other teeth, will I still have to get them removed?

Your dentist can give you the answer to that.

Personally, I’d take them out. Those pesky things have a strange habit of suddenly causing huge problems, especially when you are on vacation overseas…

Mine are gone and having them was much more problematic than getting them removed.

It has been well over a month since I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I just now noticed today that there is a small black covering on my gum where my bottom left wisdom tooth was removed. It is not sore at all. I also have good oral hygiene. I brush twice a day, and usually floss everyday or every other day. I also use mouthwash daily.

Is this just a scab from the old blood clot or is this something more serious. And remember, it has been about 2 months since my wisdom teeth were taken out.
EDIT: Ok, I went to my oral surgeon today and he just pulled it out. It was just a blood clot that my body was trying to get rid of, by pushing it out.

It is better for you to ask the dentist yourself. He or she will give you a thorough and detailed explanation of the black spot lying on your gum.

I also started getting an infection, but its better. When can I return to normal activities and eating hard food?
My right side cant open fully…

I have no flippin’ clue. Some people are able to eat semi-normally the same day they have their teeth extracted. I had all 4 removed last Tuesday and I’m still having some difficulty with eating normally. I’m still mostly sticking to mushy foods that don’t require much chewing and are easy to swallow.

Heehe, I just had mine removed friday morning and my mom is telling me today is the time to take a shower.

Since you are obviously past the icing stage, you can take a shower at a normal temperature as you could be using heat on your jaw if you needed.

Just don’t take too long of a shower, in and out!

Got my wisdom teeth out on Monday. Today is Thursday. My cheeks are swollen still, and they feel all tight and sewn up. I’m just wondering if its still possible for me to get Dry Sockets even though its been like four days already. How long does it take for the wound to actually heal or close up so that I don’t have to worry about infections and openings?
i had impacted wisdom teeth, but I’m wondering if I still have to worry about Dry Sockets because i dont see an open wound. In fact, I cant even see where the stitches are.

it took me little over a week but it depends what you eat and stuff and how much like all i ate was yogurt and i remember havin fries one day worst thing i have ever done but its different for everyone
