My sister just got oral surgery yesterday and her face is really swollen what should i do?

Her top lip is twice the size of her bottom lip and her cheeks are really swollen is it normal to have this when you get oral surgery or is somthing wrong?

Swelling is normal following oral surgery. Swelling will usually peek 48 – 72 hours following surgery and will subside.

Ice packs should be placed on your sister’s face, 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off repetitively for the first 24 hours following surgery.

Elevate her head on a couple of pillows for a few days.

Swelling may cause some jaw stiffness, this is normal and will subside.

Hope this helps!

  1. It can happen – as you have seen. Try holding a small bag of frozen peas or similar against the swollen areas. It will gradually go down. If it should get worse then of course back to the Dr/dentist.

  2. That’s normal, its just going to take time. In about two days she will be back to her self.

  4. First thing is don’t go to that oral surgeon if you need work done. Second thing. Get some ice on her face.

  5. No, she’s fine. She’ll just have to wait it out. Is her mouth wired at all? Sometimes people get in this funk when their mouths are wired shut. Just keep her company and do the best you can.

she needs to take regular anti inflammatory drugs if she is able to ,sit and sleep as upright as possible to help minimise and prevent further swelling, use regular ice packs applied externally and covered with a towel so that she doesn’t get skin burn from it.if it doesn’t resolve in a day or two or worsens in any way then she should contact the oral surgeon for advice or another appointment
