what are the dangers in drinking water and having a cigarette a few hours before oral surgery?

I am having oral surgery tomorrow morning and I am terrified! I am going to be put to sleep during the procedure but I am still scared to death. I have been through this before and yet I’m still horrified!! I just wanted to know what the dangers in drinking a little water and smoking a cigarette prior to having oral surgery are. Can anyone help??

My advice you should not smoke or drink water if you have the dentist number call him or her if you are unsure. Did the oral surgeon’s office gave you pre op instructions? If they did follow it. If not then don’t smoke or drink water. Even after the surgery, you should not smoke for at least 24 – 48 hours. You can cause a blood cot

  1. I’m not sure I would be as worried about smoking before as I would after. If you are a smoker be prepared for them to instruct you to not smoke for up to 7 days. Drinking can cause you to have an upset stomach and possibly make you vomit. You want to follow their orders very well to ensure no complications. Good Luck, get some sleep<><

  2. dont do it, they give you those instructions for a reason. mostly in case something happens, you dont have things in your stomach that can cause you to vomit etc. they give you the instructions for your benefits, not theirs. i suggest you follow them.

  3. No water. The chances of regurgitating it and aspirating are high under anesthesia. This causes pneumonia, which still kills an awful lot of people these days. No cigarettes either. Nicotine constricts blood vessels. Your blood needs to be flowing unencumbered so your heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and every other organ gets the oxygen it needs during and after the procedure. You can do it. It’s only one morning. Good luck!

its all to do with the anesthesia….when you are coming out of being under you will be sick ;) and it may also not work so well you mite be asleep but you mite not have a 100% pain blockage whilst having the surgery which would definately hurt so avoid doing anything your surgeon tells you too.
