Can a tooth that has had a root canal still give you a toothache?
I am in so much pain~! I have a toothache. A month and a half ago, I went to the dentist cause I had a toothache..he pulled the nerve out, but didnt do the crown because I had to pay up front..I dont have insurance at the moment…Now I think its that tooth that is causing me tremendous pain. Can this be possible? Any remedies? Thanks!
Absolutely a tooth that has had root canal treatment can still be problematic. Perhaps a canal was missed, the canals were not properly cleaned and shaped, or the canal filling was long (outside the tooth) or short. A root canal treatment is a tricky procedure, even if everything went well, and everything looks good on the X-ray, the tooth can continue to be a problem.
Not having a crown has nothing to do with the tooth still hurting. A crown just strengthens an otherwise weak and brittle tooth, and keep it from fracturing.
If the tooth is still hurting after a month, you have to ask yourself, 1) is the bite, say on the temporary filling high or 2) is there a problem with the root canal?
You need to see your dentist or an Endodontist (a root canal specialist) to have the tooth assessed.
Good Luck.

I hate to say this, but I work with a woman who had to get 3 root canals before it was taken care of. The dentist did 2 and then when she still had pain sent her to an oral surgeon for a third which finally took care of it. Hope this isn’t the case for you. I think the dentist did the 2nd one for free (since it was paid for once) but obviously the oral surgeon was more expense. Good luck.

sometimes they don’t pull out ALL the nerve, as a mistake…so you can feel pain still
but sometimes the infection go through the tooth, down under the root…so you will feel pain too…
i think you must go to someone else and take a radiography
you can use clove oil, but that will only help to ease pain

I feel for you! Over the last several months I have had two double root canals (I call them double because they had to go back in twice on both), finally one of the teeth had to be pulled, and I’m still in pain from the one they keep telling me doesn’t have any root left! So why do I hurt!
The only other thing I can say is that I’ve recently been told that there is a possibility of the root underneath the tooth "dying" (or they didn’t get all of the root out). I’m with you – why would I keep hurting for months if the root is really gone?

I dont get it, if you have gotten ur nerve out then there shudbt be pain, i had an infected tooth for 3 years but never had any pain cuz i had ma nerve taken out, so i dont know what is causing the pain, unless its got a hole or something, errrrrrrm, go to the dentist, or local hospital, they have to sort ya out, where am from (England) it doesnt matter if you dont have money or work, you get treatment straight way cuz there are emergency dental clinics here, gosh other countries really need to think of the people then money.

Yes it can. I had a root canal done on a cracked tooth, crown and everything. A year later that same tooth was starting to hurt and got to the point to where I couldn’t stand it anymore. I went to the dentist and had x-rays done and found out that the canal area of that tooth had cracked and had become infected. Novicain (8 shots of it) and pain pills DID NOT work for the pain so I was knock out and had it extracted by an oral surgeon. He said that I had a bone infection and I had to take heavy duty antibiotics and pain pills (they finally started to work) It was very serious. you can get blood poisoning from this.
BUT-
There are other reasons your tooth may hurt, I’ve included a link below for you to check out.
Try taking some Ibuprofen for it. Four 200mg pills equal 1 prescription strength pill.
good luck!

yes, it could be that tooth… you can gently tap on the biting surface of the tooth to be sure
you will probably need another round of antibiotics to calm it down, perhaps there is an accessory canal that didn’t show up on the dentist’s x-ray
you can take 600 – 800 mgs of ibuprofen every 4 – 6 hours for the pain
the root isn’t removed during the root canal only the nerve tissue inside the root
